The Faculty of Medical Sciences of University of Nigeria was established in 1966. Formal training of medical students did not start until 1970 (after the Nigerian civil war) when the pioneer Dean, Prof. Gilbert Onuaguluchi admitted the first batch of students. The Founding Dean incidentally is from the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, one of the departments that now constitute the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences. The other departments are as follows: Chemical Pathology, Haematology and Immunology, Medical Microbiology and Morbid Anatomy.Currently, the College of Medicine has five faculties viz., Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology and Faculty of Dentistry.
Within one year of creation, the faculty has expanded her capacity. From just providing training for medical students for the 3rd MBBS programme our faculty is now prepared to run a B.Sc. programme in Pharmacology and Medical Toxicology. The Faculty has already obtained approval to mount four new post graduate programmes in Pharmacology and Therapeutics. The Department of Haematology and Immunology has also started a post graduate progrmme. The focus is to attain the university’s requirement for 60:40 ratio for postgraduate and undergraduate enrollment that would help drive innovation and development in the country.
Our Faculty is positioned to work from the laboratory bench to the bedside of patients and to the body bag. We are ready to work and look forwards to the future for greater contributions.
